Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation- New Formula Review

Shaz Saed -- Blonde Tea Party -- www.blonde-tea-party.com -- beauty and makeup tips --

Hello, lovelies! Happy Tuesday! Any of you who are die-hard fans of Estee Lauder DoubleWear Foundation will know that the formula has changed. The shade range has also changed as 10 new shades have been added, so now there are a whopping 30 shades, the problem is, customers are finding that their regular go-to shades have altered, making them darker, pinker or orange.
Estee Lauder says they haven’t changed the formula, just added more colours to the range!! You can’t pull the wool over our eyes! The formula has clearly changed, its nothing like the original DW if anything its similar to DW Light. The texture is much more fluid, not nearly as much coverage and does not hold back shine as well as the original did.
I’ve been trialing out a ten-day sample in the shade Tawny 3w1, I used to wear Sand!

Estee Lauder DoubleWear Stay in place makeup
non-stop wear- even through heat and humidity, comfortable, oil free, oil controlling, 15hr staying power, medium, buildable, SPF 10, natural semi-matte finish.

Having had the old formula, I noticed the change straight away. Some may welcome the new change, others not so much. I personally found the old formula to be more oil control.
The original formula was thicker in consistency and dried to a matte finish on the skin. I never had oil breakthrough with this, never had to blot once.
The new formula’s blendability is great and it feels light on the skin but it has a very dewy effect for me. It does not stay matte at all which was the whole purpose of this foundation.

ELDW Original Formula – CONS
  • Thick consistency, dried quickly so had to work fast to blend
  • A tendency to look cakey/chalky if over applied
  • Caused white cast in photographs
                                          PROS
  • Full coverage, covered acne and scars perfectly
  • Oil control never had a shiny nose
  • Long lasting, stayed put from morning till night
  • Transfer resistant never rubbed off on clothes or phone

ELDW New Formula – CONS

  • Medium coverage
  • Minimal oil control, I’m shiny by 11 am
  • Changes to original shades
  • Transferred while talking on my phone

PROS

  • Easy to blend into the skin
  • Soft focus effect
  • Photographs beautifully
  • Looks natural and fresh
  • Does not get cakey
  • Feels comfortable, like you’re wearing nothing on your skin
  • Easy to remove

So, whats the verdict I hear you say? Well, it is a beautiful foundation, I like the way it feels and looks on my skin, I only wish it controlled oil like its predecessor. Needless to say, I will be purchasing a full sized bottle.

Hi all I am using Estee lauder since 2009… My dawn colour that was so beautiful its completely orange! I am so disappointed…. looking for something different!!!

  2. SHARON RAMSEY says:

The formula has changed! im also on the hunt for a new foundation. It does not control oil as the old formula did. The color is way off! i hate it

  3. Sandra says:

There has definitely been a change. Oily and causes my skin to go blotchy red and oily. Lodged a complaint/query with EL and their response was that the formula has not changed and I should get skin sensitivity advice! This after I have used this specific product for many years. Goodbye EL. On the hunt for a new brand.

  4. Cissy says:

I got a sample of eldw & they have VERY DEFINITELY CHANGED IT! WAS GOING TO RETURN TO USING IT BUT NOT NOW!

  5. LadyAnaRealtor says:

Yes I agree, they have changed the formula. Just got a new bottle yesterday and I am sadly disappointed. Does not cover my pores and I get oily quickly. Here we go…looking for a new foundation. I wonder what else has changed. I hope that they don’t touch the ANR. That has been my anti-aging go to for over 25 years.

  6. Tammy Canada says:

They probably changed it so they can make more money. Changed the formula and left things out.
This spots on my face in just an hour. The worst makeup ever.
This has to make Estee lauder look cheap and awful

  7. Vicki Bonner says:

I just bought a new bottle and thought something was going on
    This is horrible makeup
Walmart makeup is better than this crap!

I just bought a new bottle and thought something was going on
It’s splotchy and spotty. Will not stay on. I’m so upset why would you change something we already loved. Is it cheaper for you to make or something? I won’t buy another bottle!

  10. Misti Snow says:

So disappointed in this “new and improved” formula. Why would you change ANYTHING in a foundation that has landed you the #1 foundation for decades? It’s no where near the foundation the original one was. Coverage is terrible and splotchy and doesn’t last but maybe an hour. Very disappointed in Estée Lauder.

  11. Akshita says:

Omg!! This is exactly what I am feeling. I used to be a doe hard fan of estee lauder. Always swear by its products. Ever since the foundation and concealer formula have changed, it left me heart broken. Thinking to change my makeup brand now. My forever love for estee is no more. Thanks to the pathetic new formula.

  12. Ann Perch says:

I totally hate the new double wear foundation. I’ve been using the old perfect one for two decades. The new one doesn’t cover or dry or anything. My lipliner bleeds now. I totally hate it!

  13. Robin says:

I can absolutely say, from my own experience, that this article is 100% correct! I knew I couldn’t be the only one seeing the inconsistencies from EL. I always order directly from Estee Lauder now (no department stores & definitely not Amazon) to ensure I get real, fresh product. The bottle I received as of Nov 2021 is exactly as I remember it when I began buying EL when I recently entered my 30’s. The color is perfect (it has been a little off/lighter the last few orders)… The consistency is silky matte again and it looks like the EL I fell in love with originally. The batch # on the bottom of my new bottle of Fresco is A81. My last batch was A30. Not sure if that helps, but I can say for certain my newest bottle is what I remember it being! Maybe they tweaked it.

  14. Daniella Benjamin says:

Este Lauder has left.me disappointed taking a product I love and buy like pressed powder to make a different pressed 2 in 1 product. Don’t like the new formula or color match. I will have to move on to another brand I spent 100 dollars on the wrong products. The lady says looks warm now its orange.

  15. Beth says:

I have used Estee Lauder for over 15 years and have noticed the last several years the difference and thought it was just my skin until I googled.. did Estee Lauder change the formula ? and found so many people talking about it ..is there anything that compares to the old formula that I might try ?thank you

    • Shahrzad says:

They say they haven’t changed the formula. I find that the bareMinerals BarePro has a similar formula to the old double wear and the Nars Weightless foundation too! x

  16. Anna says:

I know it’s been 6 years since the old formula was discontinued, but I’m STILL looking for a replacement foundation that works as well. I wish there was a complaint line at EL. Why would they think they could improve perfection?! All they did was screw up the perfect foundation and send what were once loyal customers scrambling for another makeup. If anyone knows of a comparable foundation, PLEASE advise. Ugh.

  17. Nikki says:

Oh wow I’m not going crazy then!

I noticed straight away even the bottle has changed. I’ve been buying the double wear for over 10 years and I wont buy it again.
It’s oily on my skin, it’s thin and it’s not even good coverage and not to mention it rubs off easy. So disappointed!! I’ll be looking for a new foundation now.

  18. April Robinson says:

I searched for 10 years to find the best match and came across the old formalua which I have been using for 10 years now. There is definitely a change and I too have begun to break out which was never a problem before and the new comparable shade isn’t as good. Very disappointing to find something that worked is mo longer available. Certain the loyal customer base will seek other alternatives.

  19. Jacinta says:

Definitely changed, have used the DW foundation and the DW matte powder in Ecru for years and as soon as I got the one with the new packaging, it’s a lot more of an orangey colour and does not match my skin at all.

  20. Christina says:

I am really disappointed with the DW foundation. Having used it for years I could see the difference immediately. It is thin & watery and does not cover nearly half as well as before. It transfers onto clothes and is now very poor quality. Why on earth did they change a product that worked so well unless it was to increase profits? EL have made a big mistake. I struggled to find an alternative but won’t be buying thisagain. I feel cheated.

    • Shahrzad says:

I know exactly how you feel! It’s a lot more runnier than it used to be. I don’t know why they continue to change cult products that are/were their best sellers!

  21. alisa darnell says:

My skin has become irritated patchy red and dry

  22. Jackie B says:

The formula has changed and they added an ingredient that causes acne in some people. I’ve been wearing it for years and can no longer wear it due to all the acne I’ve been getting. I always check the ingredients in everything I put on my face so I decided to check again since my skin was so bad and was so upset to find out the formula did change.

  23. Judy Sullivan says:

Has anyone experienced problems with their skin breaking out using the new formulas I am experiencing terrible sin problems exampletubt bumps under my makeup.

  24. Jackie hayward says:

I thought I was going crazy. The colour is off and the coverage is as well . Thought I found my go to foundation guess I have to go back to another product. So sad

  25. […] out because I’ve worn this and loved it for YEARS. Upon searching the interwebs I came upon this post which told me I wasn’t alone. The first couple of comments at the bottom are recent comments, […]

  26. Brooke says:

I SO AGREE. This new formula is JUNK. They’re insane if they say it hasn’t changed. What a shame. Nothing even compared to it.

  27. jere m obrien says:

Just used what I thought, was a refill of EL
Double wear in Ecru,Loved this for years, got so many complements on my skin,(which is not that great)but this bottle is so changed I cannot believe it.I thought I purchased the wrong one! This is terrible! Thin consistency,
no coverage, nothing to “last for hours”.Have
used twice as much (is that the point?)and the color is “off”..EL you have messed around
with the wrong product. If I wanted ELDW light
I would have purchased it! Back to the drawing boards..any suggestions out there?

  28. Sapphire says:

So glad I came across your review I want sure if i was going mad! I was a massive fan of the original foundation it stayed on all day, covered my problem skin completely and it dried completely matte which i loved. The new version is rubbish! The coverage is no longer full and is now more medium, it didn’t seem to dry so ended up using a setting powder afterwards which I never had to use before, and the colours have changed I am Very pale and used to use cool bone but i purchased another bottle the other day after not having used this foundation in a while and they matched me as ecru which by lunch time had oxidized to a shade far to dark for for me. At £32.50 it’s more than I like to spend on foundation bit always justified it as it was so good but not any more unfortunately ? I won’t be buying this again and ive now I’ve got to try and find another foundation that is as good as the original double wear. Any suggestions? Thanks ?

    • Shahrzad says:

The bareMinerals barePRO performance wear liquid foundation is very similar to DW and they have an excellent shade range! I also like L’Oreal True Match for a more affordable option, just make sure to use a mattifying primer and powder with it. x

  29. Nicole says:

I’m not a fan of the new formula. A sales person asked if I liked the new water based formula. It’s awful. I only paid that much for foundation because of the way it covered my rosacea. I use twice as much with half the coverage. I need an alternative & fast!

    • Shahrzad says:

Hi Nicole, I’ve just purchased the new bareMinerals bare pro liquid foundation which I will be reviewing soon! I have filmed a first impressions and demo on my YouTube Channel though 🙂 I know, finding the perfect foundation is hard! xoxo

      • Lynsey says:

It’s not the doublewear nude water based formula people are talking about. That’s just a new product.
People are complaining about the change to the original doublewear.

  30. ADDHAYA M says:

Thank you for your review! I got a sample of original in Sand and love it!
When I went to the counter and bought Sand, I got new sand T^T.
So sad, the colors are extremely different!!!

Please, suggest the color of new formula for the one who use original-Sand like you.

    • Hi and thank you for reading my review! It is a shame when you can’t match the right colour to the original. I wear Dawn 2w1 which is yellow based and a better tone than sand as it has more warmth. Do get a sample and see what you think 🙂

  31. Anonymous says:

    Hello.
Just wondering how do you know if youve purchased the new or the old formula?
I got a sample of the cashew 3w2 and loved it and I went on to purchase it but not sure if the sample they gave me was the old formula and the bottle Ipurchased is the new formula?

    Thanks!

    • Hi there. Well the new formula is quite liquidy and blends super easily.
The old formula is no way as easy to spread/blend. I’m pretty sure by now they would have pulled
the old formula off the shelves. Also check the colour range on the website because those have changed so if your bottle has a matching shade its new! Hope I’m making sense!

    • carla says:

Hi… the old formula container has white letters on… the new formula has black letters on

  32. Lucy Wells says:

Thanks for the review! I’ve been using Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation in its original formula for a while now and really like it. Except for the cakey feeling after a few hours. But having some imperfections on my face, it covered everything up perfectly. I don’t know if I will be trying this one out. The fact that the coverage isn’t as full and that it doesn’t do oil-control as well as the original freaks me out a little. I’ll let you know whether I dive in or chicken out :).
I’ve found this really cool website though, http://www.beauty.ps/tool/foundation. It helps you pick your foundation and the shade you need. It’s really helpful you should check it out.
    Hope you like it :).

    Xx Lucy

    • Hi Lucy, I wasn’t sure if you got my reply or not? I hope you did.
